Hilltop cactus will stay on Route 1

Photo of Hilltop Steak House

Here’s how the Hilltop sign looked about a week before the restaurant closed.

The cows may have scattered but the cactus will stay. That’s the word from the developer planning to build a mixed-use project on the site of the former Hilltop Steak House in Saugus, Massachusetts.

“It really is an important marker for the site,” aid Michael Roberts, who is senior vice president of Boston development for AvalonBay Communities. “It really does represent the history of the site, and our intent is to keep it.”  (You can read more in The Boston Globe.)

The cactus needs some upgrades, Roberts added, and the signage is likely to change. But those are just details.

Here’s the big picture: The cactus will remain in all its green glory.  This is a victory for those of us who love what’s left of the tacky splendor of Route 1.

(By the way, if you like this photo you can purchase a print from my online store.)
