Lately I’ve been obsessed with doughnuts. Well, not doughnuts exactly, but the sweet neon signs that invite customers inside to taste some sugary goodness.
My current fave is Twin Donuts in Union Square. The shop has been a local Allston landmark since the early 1950s and was recently renovated.
“The property is a gateway to Union Square and it’s the first thing people see when they come to Allston,” property owner and developer Harold Brown told the Boston Business Journal in 2014, describing the renovation plans. “The Twin Donuts sign has become an icon in the neighborhood, like the CITGO sign in Kenmore Square, and we think it’s time for some improvements.”
So who are the twins? I’ve heard several versions of the story, but Wicked Local reports that the shop was named after Bill and George Anthony. The Anthony twins are the third-generation owners of the Model Café — across the street from Twin Donuts and another Allston institution — and they were born the year Twin Donuts opened.
